“Over more than 40 years of history, every challenge we have faced has given us the opportunity to redefine our limits. We have discovered our strength in pursuing the most ambitious projects, turning every complexity into an opportunity for growth. “
Renzo Piano, Peter Marino, Antonio Citterio, Mario Bellini, Paolo Portoghesi, David Chipperfield, Mario Botta, Foster & Partners, Michele De Lucchi. Working closely with internationally acclaimed architects means stepping into new worlds—ones of meticulous study, continuous dialogue, precise choices, geometric effects, scrupulous finishes, and millimetric craftsmanship.
This is how Astec, throughout its history, has left an indelible mark on prestigious brands such as Ferragamo, Bulgari, Natuzzi, Fendi, Rolex, LVMH, as well as on major international public spaces, including the Parliament of Malta, Doha Airport, and the Cymbalista Synagogue in Tel Aviv, a UNESCO heritage site. Buildings that embody the essence of their creators, shaping their most iconic locations.
The relationship with architects is not always linear: “Each one has their own personality—some are meticulous, others more eccentric; some centralize decision-making, while others excel in coordinating their teams. And in the most complex projects, at every step, an unknown always awaited us.“
The most intricate and challenging assignments are the ones that add the most color to the company’s journey, fueling the entire team with the drive to develop unprecedented solutions and achieve remarkable milestones. This is how Astec has pioneered new tones for finishes, developed extraordinary architectural bronze treatments, and introduced nanotechnological protective coatings that have revolutionized its way of working. Research, prototyping, and testing reflect an active mindset and the determination to surpass expectations—so much so that clients approach Astec with requests like: “We have something in our hands that only you can make,” as stated by the Procurement Manager of a major company.
A prime example is staircases, among the most demanding creations. Projects that begin with a completely different vision, only to evolve into architectural masterpieces that leave a lasting imprint on a city and in the hearts of those who build them. In the construction of staircases in architectural bronze or patinated steel, Astec has always worked in synergy with architects and design offices, offering solutions that are sometimes different but viable and long-lasting.
The excitement is still vivid at Astec for the “Tree of Knowledge” staircase, designed by architect Paolo Portoghesi: “To install it, we had to climb in an acrobatic manner.” A bold undertaking that did not deter the Treviso-based team, despite last-minute modifications required to perfect the structure. After three months of work, all that remained was to gaze upward, raise a glass of Prosecco, and take a deep breath—soon followed by a request for an even larger staircase.
These experiences laid the groundwork for further groundbreaking designs, defined by their distinctive complexity. Since 2023, the monumental “Feature Stair” has stood overseas in New York City’s fourth-tallest skyscraper, 50 Hudson Yards. During its construction, each step presented a new challenge: the team had to navigate complications related to the structure’s weight, the fluidity of its design, and the intricacy of the wrought iron elements. An on-the-spot adaptation was required to bring to life the vision conceived by the world-renowned architects at Foster + Partners.
One common thread among many architectural bronze projects is the satisfaction of witnessing the completed result, sometimes accompanied by a few words of praise from the architect or client. “You have created a monument within a monument” remarked Salvatore Ferragamo himself upon the completion of his loggia restoration at the Hotel Portrait in Milan, a project bound by the constraints of the Italian Heritage Authority.
It is in moments like these that the driving force behind Astec transforms into trust, and trust into boldness—opening the door to new horizons alongside visionary architects, for projects that may seem impossible at first glance, yet ultimately redefine what is achievable.
