When working on historic buildings, every project requires an exceptionally delicate balance between conservation, technical innovation, and architectural enhancement. Operating within sites of significant historical and cultural value means engaging with unique structures, where every construction element must interact with the original fabric without compromising its identity. In this context, Astec’s role extends beyond meeting functional requirements: it involves developing solutions that integrate seamlessly, discreetly, and precisely into the existing architecture.

For Astec, intervening in historic heritage demands a design approach grounded in research, reversibility, and minimal impact. Every solution is developed to reduce interference with original masonry and materials to the greatest extent possible, prioritizing non-invasive installation technologies. The objective is to preserve the integrity of the historic building while ensuring safety, durability, and the highest standards of execution. Materials thus become a design tool capable of enhancing the building’s identity without introducing elements that feel foreign or visually discordant.

The selection of materials plays a central role in this process. Noble, living materials such as architectural bronze and copper alloys establish a harmonious dialogue with historic surfaces thanks to their ability to evolve over time and develop tones that naturally complement the architectural context.

Giotto’s Bell Tower, Florence

Among Astec’s most significant heritage projects is the intervention carried out on Giotto’s Bell Tower, located in the heart of Florence’s historic center. Designed in the first half of the 14th century under the direction of Giotto, the bell tower stands as one of the most iconic examples of Florentine Gothic architecture and a monument of extraordinary historical and cultural significance.

The project involved the complete reconstruction of the internal staircase, including both steps and handrails, as well as the fabrication and installation of the wall paneling and reveals. From the earliest design stages, the primary challenge was to develop solutions that would be exceptionally respectful of the existing structure, minimizing impact on the historic masonry while ensuring that all installed elements could be removed with ease if required in the future.

To meet these requirements, Astec developed bespoke fixing and installation systems specifically engineered to minimize interference with the historic fabric. Every detail was designed according to a reversible approach, where technical precision became an integral part of architectural conservation.

The management of the project schedule also presented a significant challenge. Installation activities could only be carried out during a limited two-week period each year—initially for the installation of the wall paneling and subsequently for the handrails and staircase cladding. This required exceptionally rigorous planning and absolute precision throughout the manufacturing, delivery, and installation phases, ensuring that all work was completed within the agreed timeframe without disrupting the continuous flow of thousands of visitors who access the bell tower every day.

The choice of materials and finishes was guided by the desire to enhance the monument’s historic character through a material language consistent with the existing architecture. The Medium Patina finish applied to the architectural bronze was selected for its ability to harmonize with the tones of the stonework and the historic identity of Giotto’s Bell Tower, creating a natural and balanced visual integration.

In projects such as this, technology does not impose itself upon historic architecture; rather, it serves its preservation. Through an approach founded on research, craftsmanship, technical precision, and a deep understanding of materials, Astec develops solutions that engage with architectural heritage in a respectful yet contemporary manner, contributing to its enhancement and ensuring its continuity for future generations.
